took too long to find, in your eyes, my best surprise [04 Apr 2006|09:06am]
[ mood | happy ]
[ music | Joshua Radin- These Photographs ]

So, lately, good things have been happening; these are the most major:

- The band played "Icarus" (my piece) on Saturday night for a ton of people, and I conducted, etc... collectively, we played it better than we ever have before. I was blown away and at the end I almost cried. It was incredible. I gave Rey a huge hug at the end & he was crying too and stuff. Good times.
- I GOT ACCEPTED TO HARVARD!!!
- Seriously. And I think I'm going. I first got the news in an email Thursday night, right before dress rehearsal, and thought there had been some m istake. ACtually, I STILL do. I am totally blown away. This totally turned my life upside-down; all my previous college planning (Ithaca vs Wesleyan vs Bowdoin vs etc) is officially moot. I'm absolutely floored.
- I dunno, life is pretty good. It's good to have been accepted to a college you like.

slain by the words i lack my world is bursting sappy music [03 Jan 2006|11:41pm]
[ mood | amused ]
[ music | Mike Doughty- Madeline and Nine ]

I was just reading a bunch of my earliest entries in this thing... they're actually pretty interesting. Kinda sad that I've deteriorated so much. But here goes bulleted update #972:

- Xmas break? Awesome.
- Christmas was tons of fun... we were at dad's for christmas eve, Kara DIDN'T pass out in church, and so the evening was deemed a success by all. The night before, by the way, Melissa came over and so did Kelly, Sam, and Phil. And the following morning we all went walking around the hospital (minus melissa). This, by the way, is a totally irrelevant story.
- Christmas Day was hectic, but way good. Bill and Jeanne gave me an iPod, and I love them :) It's like the greatest present I never knew i needed. But it's totall changed my life.
- (insert other fun xmas break stuff here)
- New Years Eve.. I had to go buy popper things so I went to Newburyport with Melissa and took her to this Cafe place that I love. They have these cute little teapot things that they give you so I like them. Anyway, after that, we drove back to Mom's in the snow, stayed for a bit, then went to Meredith's party, which was great. I love all of my friends. We intercepted Johnkelly there and brought him back to my house around 11, and stayed at my mom's party for the night. yay 2006.
- I made my last monthly mix thing... that was the greatest idea ever, but I'm not sure if I'm gonna do it for 2006. The iPod complicates stuff too... I dunno. It's interesting though, to look back and see how I've evolved and progressed and stuff. Nostalgia rules, music helps.
- Jazz band gig yesterday at the inauguration (and I played solo at the end for the reception too... meh). It was kinda uneventful except Jobo and Paul almost got in a huge fight. I got to act like a hero, but it was overall pretty dumb... I hope they get over this crap soon. And I don't care if either of them read that.
- Oh yeah... Steph left my trombone at the Tenney cause she's a big loser :-P
- This piece I'm writing is way stressful. I'm almost done, but its still such a pain. Oh, and speaking of which, my Ithaca audition/portfolio review is all scheduled for 2/25. Eek.
- I have to get my wisdom teeth yanked out, apparently, cause they're all pointing in goofy directions. I went to the oral surgeon today (met my dad there), and he pointed out the fact that yes, my mouth is retarded and emphatically recommended that I sign the papers allowing them to dislodge my molars from my skull. March 6. Woo.
- At work, Megan gave me cereal for xmas and Lorraine gave me candy... I love them :)
- Annnnnd I talked with Kara the other day and it was a good conversation, about how we need to talk more. That's good. We are positive thinkers.

anyway

and merry 2006 :-D

oily marks appear on walls [19 Dec 2005|09:25pm]
[ mood | peaceful ]
[ music | Imogen Heap- Hide and Seek ]

Sooo what's happened lately.
-These last two Fridays have been snow days. The first one was ri-damn-diculous and we got like 15 inches, but this past weekend's was a dud. It kidna screwed me up too, but I'll get to that later. On the first one, though, I met Greg at the Tenney and we trekked through the blizzard to Starbucks. Because we're both mildly retarded. Oh, speaking of Greg, I've been running into him at stoplights lately, and it's kinda weird. BUt cool.
- So Tri-M was supposed to play at the Loop on Saturday, marking the culmination of my organization efforts as president. And, in a neat little "fuck you" from the universe, there was a snow day on Friday, so no one had instruments- they were all at school. So I spent all day trying to contact people and figure out what they needed, and how to get into the school, etc. Finally I got in touch with Jade and she saved my life by calling everyone and figuring out what they needed. The next morning, she and I went into the school during track practice and snuck through the auditorium to smuggle instruments out. It was a damn adventure. But we ended up playing as planned and it was cool.
-On Friday night, I went to the Pops as part of the Jobo Family Xmas. It was tons of fun... his family is awesome. And behind us sat these two old fat guys who bitched about everything (mostly us, but then their anger was directed towards the vocal group that was performing). It was irritating at first, but then it was damn funny.
- Paul and I went to Newburyport last Saturday and wandered around, eventually all the way up to Portsmouth. Who knows why.
- Sarah had an Xmas party on the 17th that was marked by an intense Yankee Swap. There was a fish, a ninja suit, and a working spiderman outfit, and basically general calamity. And I got knighted because I gave Justin and Heather the fish. Yeap.
- Took Melissa shopping on Friday, cause I'm boyfriend of the year :)
- Uhh other than that? There have been jazz band concerts, Jobo and Paul are in a state of vehement intoleration of each other, Kara's coming home tomorrow, and I got Melissa the coolest Xmas present ever. Oh, and on the day of that first snowstorm, we got our tree and decorated it :) Twas fun.

and listen to imogen heap.

if we could be closer longer, that would help me, help me so much [05 Dec 2005|10:40pm]
[ mood | relieved ]
[ music | Paul McCartney- Anyway ]

-Know what's pathetic? I actually feel really really guilty for not updating this journal. It's so sad, but I seriously feel bad. And that's dumb. But anyway.
- The real reason I haven't been updating is because of college applications and how theyve been driving me totally insane. But anyway, here's a sorta-recap of all the things I've failed to report:

- Thanksgiving happened... football game in the wicked cold, got a flat tire when I slid into a curb and had to leave Hermes (one name for my car, whom I love dearly) all alone at the high school all day and all night because no one was open on the holiday. It was heartbreaking. But he's all better now :)
- I made districts! But I'm like 80th chair... haha good thing they took a million baritones.
- APparently theres some radio station in North Carolina that wants to play my music? That's hawt.
- OH! Methuen kicked some ass at the Turkey Toss. We may suck at lots of things, but catching frozen poultry is not one of them. I drove in with Melissa, John, Lily, and Greg, and it was a total party. JOhn almost got us killed by flipping off every vehicle between Methuen and Malden. And also, he called the station to tell them "the rangers are coming." good thing.
- Demko showed up at school the other day!! It was amazing.
- Greg and I did Tuba Christmas and totally did not get lost coming out of Boston. It was a wicked fun day though. We left early in the morning and I followed him to his work in Lawrence, we left my car there and drove his in to Brookline where the rehearsal was. WE practiced there then split and ate at the Prudential and met up again at Fanueil Hall to play in the snow! And it owned. And I drove on the streets of Boston, bitches.
- Actually, I did it the following weekend too, but totally by accident. I had Melissa Jimmy and Tu in the car and missed the exit for 128 and the Burlington Mall, where we were meeting Sarah and Chris. ANd they now hate me. But we made the best of it anyway. Twas damn cold though.
- DHI is fun.
- I have a myspace now and it's kinda sorta taking over my life. Eek.
- I dropped off about 75% of my college app materials in guidance today. My brain is happy now :)
- My love for the live loops of Howie Day was reasserted today when I listened to Annalise in the car. That man is Jesus.
- After Tuba Christmas, I went over to Paul's house and we watched a movie called Elephant. My life hasn't felt normal ever since. We were so emotionally beat up by the movie that we had to watch music videos for a while afterward to unwind.
- Oh, and I went to a jekus crobe show a little before Thanksgiving. I love all of those people, cause they make me happy.

i'm done for now... hopefully I'll update sooner than in a month. hopefully.

each descending peak of the LCD brought you a little further away from me [15 Nov 2005|09:43pm]
[ mood | complacent ]
[ music | DCfC- What Sarah Said ]

-Tonight I went to the Sahara club with Greg and Steph, cause jazz band was cancelled. The piano player was amazing.. he was this old guy who just kinda ethereally glided over the keys. I think he was a ghost. And the trumpet player looked like a young Jack Casey. Like, a lot.
-Last weekend was pretty crazy. Guster owned- at one point Brian put his hand through a damn drum and sliced it open, which was pretty hawt. We missed Matt Pond PA, but I bought a shirt so it was cool. When we got back, Kara was home, so I got to spend time with her for the first time in a while. That was nice.
-Dad won the election, so yay for that. I held signs all day in various locations around Methuen.. started out at the Marsh w/ John and Steph, then my myself, then with Sean, then did SPanish w/ Tim and Ross, then held signs by myself at the Timony, then jazz band, then dsafasf. It was a crazy day.
-I now sit in the wayyy back corner of math class, which equals we sit and talk about cursive and armpits and turkeys and not math. This term will be a lot of me sucking at calculus.
-Melissa is finally returning to school! Everybody congratulate her on being awake when you see her.
-District auditions Saturday and I am totally in no way prepared lol
- More later, hos.

don't hold me down [06 Nov 2005|10:15am]
[ mood | good ]
[ music | David Berkeley- Times Square ]

I went to NYC for the first time in my life and it was pretty awesome. We rode in on a bus chartered by the Andover Community people at like 5:30 PM and our bus driver was a big jerk, but it was all good. I went in with my dad, Katie, Bill, Jeanne, and Johnkelly, and most of the ride there was spent sleeping.
We finally got in around 10/10:30, and drove in through Harlem (One kid said "IT LOOKS LIKE SESAME ST," whereupon my uncle leaned over and went "yeah i think i just saw elmo drinking from a paper bag a few blocks back"). She dropped us off at Rockefeller Center and we had the whole day to roam.
We went through NBC, Trump Tower, Central Park (saw Stawberry Fields), lobby of the Empire State Building, the subway (way confusing compared to Boston, cause i know that one), Battery Park, the WTC site and more. It was really kinda neat cause you see all these places in TV and movies and books but it was funny how I never thought of them as actual places. Like Times Square? It was almost surreal because my only proof that it existed had been in childrens books, TRL, and New Years Eve.
The bus driver picked us up around 6 by the library, and we drove home for about 8 million hours. Fun day though.

OH, so I found a new band that I really like called the Fray, a few days back. And I went to their website last night, and clicked on "tour dates" and oops they opened for Ben Folds last night >:-0 What the hell.

white ladder, water and wine [03 Nov 2005|09:28pm]
[ mood | apathetic ]
[ music | David Gray- White Ladder ]

Wellll I need to update this.
But I can't right now cause I need to write a paper.
Main stuff:
-KALEIDOSCOPE IS OUT!!!!!!! And Bull Moose has some, which is really cool.
-Band is over... we stood still at finals, which sucked.
-DHI had its first reh. tonight... my audition yesterday was fun though... I brought the loop pedal and beatboxed and rapped. I rapped like a mofo.
-I just got a haircut and I look like a total doofus. But hey whatever man.
-I rediscovered David Gray and Dexter Freebish, and they're both damn good.
-And I heart Matt Pond PA. Oh, and while I'm rambling about music stuff, I heard David Berkeley ON THE RADIO today. Which was weird. But awesome.
-I visited Wesleyan last week and it was awesome and I wanna go there.
-I still need to talk to Savory about the 11 and the 18 :-/
-Melissa is wicked wicked sick and I feel really bad :( Everybody should try to cheer her up.
-Going to NYC on Saturday for the first time ever, which should be interesting/amazing.
-Kara's coming home for Vets Day :)

[ music | Mike Doughty- Unsingable Name ]

-So when I left school today I was greeted by a carful of people. ANd it was my car which was weird. Apparently I'd left it unlocked and Christine, Kerri, Anthony, Paul, Ashley, and Jobo all got in and waited 20 minutes for me to get out my Tri-M meeting. But I heart them all so its cool. Anthony left his cell phone in the car though, so I just got back from dropping it off at his place. I also bought new shoes. Woot.
-G's scavenger hunt thing is pretty amazing. I am in total admiration of how much time that guy must have on his hands.
-I met with Mrs McLaughlin today to go over some college stuff (THANK GOD) and she totally saved me. It was wicked wicked relieving to have someone kinda understand what Im talking about. Or care. Or something. Anyway it was good.
-Next Tuesday Ross and I are driving up to Colby to do interviews. Setting it up was tons of fun (aka complicated), but the mini-road trip should rule.
-Fred's uber-awesome art exhibit at Borders had its grand opening last night- Katie and I went over, then shot off to the mall to buy more Guster tickets (PS HEY IF YOURE COMING PLEASE LET ME KNOW SOON)

[ mood | good ]
[ music | Tom McRae- The Girl Who Falls Downstairs ]

-I love fall! I hate college apps. But fall's pretty awesome.
-My two favorite colleges right now are Bowdoin and Wesleyan. For now. But suggestions are totally welcome.
-DHI and jazz tryouts are coming up.
-I have Kaleidoscope merchandise on sale now and that is wicked cool. Buy a shirt :) http://www.cafepress.com/bencosgrove
-CDs are due back sometime the middle of next week!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-Band is continually getting shat on by weather, mosquitoes, schedules, etc. We had our home show on SUnday but it was inside. The judge liked me this time though.
-Went over John's house w/ Melissa and Lily last weekend and watched some crazy Japanese horror movie while eating tons of pizza and generally goofing around. Which is basically what life should always be like. Afterwards I brought Melissa home to where she was staying in Lowell (her grandparents' house... HER house was being renovated), which was an adventure.
-Also drove around with Melissa to Andover and we got coffee and stuff and that was fun :) I also showed her the house I lived in when I was tiny, and she was impressed.
-Did I mention I hate college apps?

[ music | Matt Pond PA- New Hampshire ]

-Visited Bowdoin College today and really liked it. Think I'll apply there.
-Mailed out the Kaleidoscope master today (phewwww). G helped me re-edit it yesterday during internship, so now it sounds pretty cool.
-The mailing was accompanied by a minor financial crisis, called "I wrote a check for more money than I had in my checking account, then couldn't move money from savings to checking cause I lost my book." But luckily the Methuen Coop. was awesome and saved my ass from the poverty I'd have been stricken with had Banknorth got a hold of me.
-Courtney & I won the English dept. SOAR awards. I was very much psyched. :)
- Library staff dinner was yesterday; twas much fun. (and my last one :(:(:( )

im tired

PS i heard the new OAR song and its kinda weird. like very un-OAR. i dunno....

[ music | John Butler Trio- Oldman ]

- #1 in new news: I've burned the premaster for Kaleidoscope!!!!!! Less than a month till the dupes are done. AHHHH!!!
- #2 in new news: band has been fucked by the district's "proactive approach to fighting EEE." No outdoor activity after 6:00 PM, etc. While I agree that yes, EEE sucks, this is a totally unnecessary action, taken only so the town can cover its collective ass. So I have NO idea what my schedule is for the next several months, but I dunno... we'll see. Right now we aren't even allowed to go to finals.
- Went to Amy's bday party (it was on a boat!) last night with Melissa and Paul- I got out of work at 5, Paul met me at the library, we picked up Melissa, then I tore up 495 we JUST barely got on the boat (then it didn't leave for another half-hour cause the dj was late). It was kinda an awkward night, but definitely fun nonetheless; we sat around a table and ate chips and just talked. Paul and I also met Melissa's old friend Taylor who ended up being really nice. Then we all kinda watched the drunk rest-of-the-party inhale helium and make phone calls. Twas a blast.
- Paul and I sang our lungs out to Ben Folds and Dispatch on the ride home and Melissa thought it was cute.
- I'm playing bass today in this choral concert thing that's a benefit for Katrina (don't come- if you wanna help, just mail a check to the Red Cross; the show will suck). But it's been pretty funny going through the rehearsals. One of the keyboardists is this hilarious guy who wants to teach me how to tune pianos. Etc.

life's pretty good overall

i went to school with twenty-seven jennifers [19 Sep 2005|07:11pm]
[ mood | busy ]
[ music | Mike Doughty- 27 Jennifers ]

SOrry! Haven't updated in a while. Here's a catchup:

- Went out to dinner etc with Melissa last weekend- we went to Bertuccis then just kinda roamed, and it was a lot of fun :)
- I loovvvvve my english class. Jennings is amazing.
- Thursday was crazy-stressful car accident day. And I narrowly avoided a crash myself- some 16-year old girl out for the first time with her permit pulled out 10 feet in front of me in the rain and it was ridiculously close to hitting. Like PAPER close. BUt the mother (after she stopped hyperventilating) told me what a good driver I was and thank you for not hitting them and so I felt good.
- Caroline lent me the new Herbie Hancock CD... it's amazing
- Watched this Merlyn movie with Paul and Moses yesterday. Annnnd we ALMOST survived the whole thing. After about two hours it was deemed "too ABC" and we bailed. Plus it wasn't true enough to the once and future king to satisfy such a nerdly audience as we.
- Westford game was Friday night... saw Max (aka Bizarro Ben) and when we both stood next to each other in front of the Methuen band, everyone started freaking out. GOod times. Ummm so yeah then it rained and we all went home, the end. Oh, and I drove Matt and Britt home in the rain cause I'm a good human.
- My car was being a little bitch on Saturday night, but its attitude has since adjusted.
- We're playing tennis again in gym class, which is pretty fun. Justin and I got yelled at today by Ms Hyde for taking our shoes off, though. We were sad.
- I've been mastering Kaleidoscope and it should be done in the next month. !!!!!!!
